Today we blazed trails up and around Irwin, near Crested Butte, at sunset. Hours later, still feeing truly “high” from the beauty and peacefulness of the mountains. Another reason to love Colorado!

A former high-elevation mining town, Crested Butte has more of a rural, laid-back vibe than some of the state’s more glitzy resorts. With a population of under 2,000, Crested Butte’s Victorian-era downtown houses a smattering of boutiques and restaurants, complemented by amazing surrounding scenery of the Elk Mountains and access to some of the best skiing in the state.
Awesome accommodations, après-ski options, small town appeal, a restaurant scene and plenty of entertainment off the slopes — these are the qualities of a great ski town! For the past four weeks, USA TODAY 10Best readers have been voting for their favorite from a pool of 20 nominees, hand-picked by our panel of pro skiers and snowboarders. The polls are closed and the results are in!
The top 10 winners in the category Best Ski Town are as follows:
• Crested Butte, Colo.
• North Conway, N.H.
• Truckee, Calif.
• Lake Placid, N.Y.
• Steamboat Springs, Colo.
• Taos, N.M.
• Bozeman, Mont.
• Whistler, B.C.
• Stowe, Vt.
• Bend, Ore.
A panel of experts picked the initial 20 nominees, and the top 10 winners were determined by popular vote. Experts Sadie Bjornsen, Sophie Caldwell, Abby Ghent, Caroline Gleich, Elena Hight and Megan McJames were chosen based on their extensive ski or snowboarding experience.
Other nominees for Best Ski Town included Aspen, Colo.; Breckenridge, Colo.; Girdwood, Alaska; Jackson Hole, Wyo.; Ketchum, Idaho; Nelson, B.C.; Park City, Utah; Stratton, Vt.; Telluride, Colo. and Vail, Colo.
Congratulations to Crested Butte and all of the top 10 ski towns!

Who wouldn’t want to head to the mountains for Spring Break! I am in!
Crested Butte News reports that numbers rise at ski area and flights bringing in more people than in 2015.
It’s hard to believe that Spring break is just a few weeks away. The area is steadily growing busy at Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) and around the valley. The community can expect a steady but manageable level of activity.
“Numbers are climbing,” says Erica Mueller, director of innovations and relations at CBMR. Each weekend from now until spring break, the resort is showing high occupancy levels.
Overall, February room nights are up 19 percent over last year, and Mueller expects the weekends of February 20 and February 27 to be hoppin’. March is about flat to last year—though there’s still time for that to change.
